What the Tempest 2.0 manual covers

  • Introduction, selection and pump guide: how the system wets and hydrates neat polymer through a multi-stage mixing regime, and how to select a model.
  • Layout and connections: water and neat polymer connections, and controller electrical connections.
  • Tempest 2.0 controller: main panel, menu navigation, local and remote modes, remote start/stop and alarms.
  • Controller programming: feed mode, local % concentration and feed rate, general timers, low water alarm, flush timers, remote % concentration and feed rate, remote units of measure, resetting the remote input calibration curve, resetting alarms, and data logging and graphing.
  • Grundfos DDA Smart Digital pump: control elements and pump calibration.
  • Installation and start-up: priming the polymer pump, dilution water, setting the dilution water flow and post-dilution operation.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting, specifications, a step-by-step programming guide and general arrangement drawings.

Tempest 2.0 quick reference

How does the Tempest 2.0 control polymer dosing?

Primary dilution water enters through a solenoid valve and its flow rate is measured continuously and fed back to the Tempest 2.0 controller. Using values from the calibration stage, the controller automatically adjusts the polymer pump output to hold the desired solution. The controller shows critical parameters in real time and includes on-board data logging with graphing.

How do I prime the polymer pump?

There are two ways. With the polymer line connected to the source or a full calibration column, press and hold the 100% key on the Grundfos DDA pump. Or, from the Tempest 2.0 controller Home Screen, select Edit, then Priming on the Polymer Controller screen, and the pump runs at 100% for the pre-programmed time.

What polymer supply setup is recommended?

Flooded suction of the neat polymer is recommended. If suction lift is required, no more than four feet is recommended, using a suction lance. Filling the calibration column with polymer and pumping from it can help prime the pump.

What dilution water pressure does the Tempest 2.0 need?

The system needs water pressure at least 26 psi above the injection point, and no higher than 90 psi. Open the dilution water isolation ball valve and the solution outlet isolation valve before start-up.

Troubleshooting common Tempest 2.0 problems

Problem Possible cause Remedy
No water flow Water supply failed Check water pressure
No electrical power Check power supply
Dirt in solenoid valve Clean valve
No solution, only water Polymer isolating valve closed Open valve
Air in polymer pump Re-prime pump
Polymer pump defective Overhaul pump
Polymer check valve clogged Clean
Solution strength varying Partial blockage in the polymer check valve, mixing tee or water flow meter Clean
Varying water supply pressure Check water pressure at peak demand and whether other users restrict supply to the feeder. Consider a booster pump.

The full manual includes a maintenance planner covering pump calibration, water flow, check valves, the mixing tee and complete pump maintenance.
